Considerations For Transporting ATV's

When you are going to ride your ATVs, you might have a logistics problem. How do you get your ATV to the trail where it is legal to drive, since it may or may not be legal on the roadside? Or if you are going a long distance away on a vacation specifically for riding, how do you safely transport your gear and all of the equipment with an ATV? There are a few options when it comes to hauling your ATVs across town or even across the country. Depending on what your budget is will determine how many options you have!

Open Trailers

The most common way for ATVs to be hauled anywhere is with a trailer pulled behind the back of a vehicle. The trailer can be loaded down with gas cans, helmets, ATV gear and all of the ATVs themselves. Trailers come in all sorts of sizes, where they may hold one or they may hold 4 ATVs. No matter what the size of the ATV is, it should be chained down and secured on the trailer. All of the equipment stored with it should also be secured so nothing flies off or shakes loose while on the road.

Closed ATV Trailers

Closed ATV trailers are also fairly common, but a little more expensive. These trailers will have solid walls and a roof over the trailer that holds the ATVs inside. This method of hauling ATVs works best for people who are on the road a lot with their equipment. The walls and roof of the trailer allow for shelving and other hooks where equipment can be stored permanently. There isn’t any loading and unloading before a trip, everything is already left in the trailer because that is where it is stowed. Overall, the closed ATV trailer can hold more equipment since it is closed to the elements and anything inside is protected. The ATVs and the equipment still need to be secured while driving.

Off-road Campers

When you really enjoy ATV riding, then you might want to invest in an off-road camper. These campers are made to be a bit sturdier than regular campers are. Off-road campers have diamond plate inside and out, making it hold up if you want to literally pull it off the road with you and set up camp somewhere. The camper will be a normal camper, but then it can have one of two different options. There could be an open trailer in the front part of the camper, where dirt bikes and quads can be loaded on. Or there could be a covered portion at the bake of the trailer where the bikes and quads can be loaded in to. Once the ATVs are removed from the covered portion, there are more beds that can fold down in order to sleep more people inside. Both ways are functional and convenient for the person who likes to be on the trail, yet not pay for a hotel to stay in a far away location.
